Portfolio management simulator scoops high
profile e-learning award

Marcus Rees with awardAn innovative online learning product for the financial services sector has scooped bronze in a highly competitive e-learning award.

Market-Class, which counts London’s prestigious CASS Business School among its clients, reached the finals in the category of ’Best Learning Game, Simulation or Virtual Environment’ in the 2010 E-Learning Awards, announced recently at The London Marriott.

Market-Class launched in 2009 to provide financial organisations and higher-education business schools with a realistic simulation of managing funds and investments. Within the online simulator, participants must manage their portfolio to manage risk and achieve the greatest returns. The investment decisions made by the participants affect the prices and portfolio values within the simulator, just as they would in the real world.

Marcus Rees, Chief Operating Officer comments on the product: “I and my partners all have extensive experience of finance and investment and recognised the value in developing an online learning environment where people could experience the demands and decisions of professional fund managers without the risks of losing real money.

“Simulating investment practices has real value for business schools where students can apply and demonstrate academic understanding, and for financial services businesses where the learning and team-based play can develop the skills of their staff.”

The awards, organised by e.learning age, recognise innovation and quality in e-learning. Applicants in the ‘Best Learning Game, Simulation or Virtual Environment’ category had to demonstrate effective use of technology in meeting the learning objectives of the audience for which it is designed.

Marcus Rees says: ”Our award submission was a case study of a global financial information business which used our product to provide training to 27 teams of 3-4 people across the world. This was a great example of how Market-Class can be used across departments and borders.

“To have achieved bronze in this prestigious award within a year of the Market-Class launch is very rewarding and motivating.”

The UK’s e-learning market has exploded in recent years with organisations realising its benefits of convenience, cost savings and simulated learning environments that textbooks can’t provide. A Learning Light report in 2009 claimed that the UK’s e-learning market is now worth somewhere between £300-£400million, a considerable increase to its 2007 estimation of £160-£250million.
